Actuarial Banquet

The 2010 Illinois State University Actuarial Program will hold its annual Actuarial Banquet on Friday, April 30, 2010, at 5 p.m. in The Chateau Hotel. Actuarial students are welcome, please register with Ms. Susan Mitchell, tel. 309-438-7797, e-mail: smitche@ilstu.edu.

College of Arts and Sciences Distinguished Lecture: 2010 Actuarial Program Research Event

Dr. Krzysztof Ostaszewski, FSA, CERA, CFA,FSAS, MAAA, Actuarial Program Director, will be the 2009/2010 College of Arts and Sciences Distinguished Lecturer. He will present his lecture entitled: "Modigliani, Miller, and Mortgages" on Tuesday, April 27, 2010, at 7:30 p.m., in the Old Main Room of the Bone Student Center. This lecture is also the 2010 Actuarial Program Research Event and it is open to the public.

Actuarial Club Meeting

On Friday, February 5, 2010, Dr. Krzysztof Ostaszewski, FSA, CERA, CFA, SFAS, MAAA, Actuarial Program Director,

made a presentation to the Actuarial Club on issues in the program and prospects for employment in view of current economic situation.

 

Actuarial Program Events: 2009

Actuarial Club Bowling Night with Alumni

The Actuarial Club wil host a bowling night at the Billards and Bowling Center on November 12, 2009, 7:00-9:00 p.m. Casual night to mingle and bowl with others in the Club and some recent alumni.

High School Actuarial Career Fairs

The 2009 Actuarial Career Fairs were held in October 2009. These annual fairs are primarily intended for high school students, but are open to college students, and anyone else seeking to learn about the actuarial career. These were not employment events, but rather meetings designed to provide information about the actuarial career. No resumes could be accepted. The events were held:

This event was organized by the Actuarial Program of Illinois State University, and it received support from the Midwestern Actuarial Forum, the Katie School of Insurance and Financial Services, the Casualty Actuarial Society, and the Society of Actuaries.

Meet the Firms

2009 Meet the Firms event was held Friday, September 25, 2009, 6-8 p.m. in the Old Main Room of the Bone Student Center on campus of Illinois State University, in Normal, Illinois. Campus map can be found at: http://www.IllinoisState.edu/map/. This event was an opportunity for actuarial employers to present themselves to students and collect students' resumes for internships and jobs. Visit by Allstate Insurance

On Monday, September 14, 2009, our program hosted a visit by representatives of Allstate Insurance. The event took place at 6:30 p.m. in Stevenson Hall room 219. More information is here.

Actuarial Club Meeting: Internship Night

The Actuarial Club held a meeting in Stevenson Hall room 401 at 7 p.m. on September 10, 2009. Students who had an internship last Summer talked to those who are looking into getting one for next Summer. The discussion was about important questions such as: what kind of work to expect and what to expect in the interview process.

Actuarial Club Meeting about Actuarial Exams

The Actuarial Club will hold a meeting in Stevenson Hall room 436 at 4 p.m. on Friday, August 28, 2009, and during this meeting Dr. Krzysztof Ostaszewski will make a presentation explaining the professional actuarial examinations process.

Actuarial Club Picnic

The annual picnic of the Actuarial Club was held in People's Park (located just South of the College of Business parking garage on the corner of University St. and Beaufort St.) on Sunday August 23, 2009, 3-6 p.m.

Actuarial Research Seminar

Actuarial Research Seminar, lead by Dr. Wei Hao, FSA, MAAA, actuary at State Farm, in the Fall 2009 semester is held Fridays, at 3:30 p.m. in Stevenson Hall room 132, the Adlai Stevenson Room. Seminar schedule is posted here.

Actuarial Banquet

2009 Actuarial Banquet was held Friday, May 1, 2009 at The Chateau Hotel in Bloomington, Illinois. The keynote speaker was Ms. Sarah Brands, FSA, MAAA, an alumna of Ilinois State University and an actuary at Wellpoint.

Actuarial Research Event: Dr. Keith Holler, FCAS, ASA, ARM spoke on

Predictive Modeling in Property/Casualty Insurance

The 2009 Actuarial Research Event was held on Friday, April 17, 2009 at 5 p.m. in the College of Business room 357. The event was a special lecture by Dr. Keith Holler, FCAS, ASA, ARM, who spoke on Predictive Modeling in Property/Casualty Insurance. Dr. Holler, currently with Erie Insurance, worked previously in Travelers National Programs with responsibility for managing the actuarial pricing and reserving functions. Prior to joining National Programs, Dr. Holler led the Personal Insurance Research and Development team at Travelers, which was instrumental in the development of the Quantum Auto and Quantum Home products. Before re-joining Travelers, Dr. Holler worked at the Hartford in their Personal Lines Research and Development team and their Claims Research and Development team. In the period from 1993 to 1998, he was a consultant with Tillinghast. Dr. Holler started his career with Travelers. Dr. Holler holds a Ph.D. and M.A. degrees in Statistics from the University of Connecticut, and M.A. and B.S. degrees from the University of Buffalo. He is a Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society (FCAS), an Associate of the Society of Actuaries (ASA), and an Associate in Risk Management (ARM). Dr. Holler has written about a dozen papers and articles in various insurance and actuarial publications, and has given many presentations at various conferences including the most recent Casualty Actuarial Society Predictive Modeling Conference. Dr. Holler is a member of the Advisory Board of the Actuarial Program at Illinois State University.

Visit by Dr. Paul Musial

Dr. Paul Musial of Chicago State University gave a research lecture on April 6, 2009, 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. in Center of Visual Arts Building, room 149.The abstract of the lecture is posted here. This was followed by an open meeting with actuarial students in Williams Hall room 128 from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
