Actuarial Program Events: 2016

Presentation about stochastic reserving methodologies by Mr. Chris Holt of Pinnacle Actuarial Resources

On Wednesday, March 30, 2016, at 6 p.m., in STV 401, the Actuarial Program and the Actuarial Club will host a presentation by Mr. Chris Holt of Pinnacle Actuarial Resources, on stochastic reserving methodologies. Pizza and soft drinks will be provided. All students are welcome.

Presentation "Plotting Your Actuarial Career Trajectory" by Mr. Aaron Hillebrandt, FCAS

On Thursday, March 3, at 6:00 pm.,in Williams Hall room 001F, Mr. Aaron Hillebrandt, FCAS, consulting actuary with Pinnacle Actuarial Resources, our alumnus and a member of our Advisory Board, will make a presentation "Plotting Your Actuarial Career Trajectory". Pizza and soft drinks will be provided. All students are welcome.

2016 Actuarial Research Event

The 2016 Actuarial Research Event will be held on Tuesday, February 23, 2016, at 5:00 p.m. in Stevenson Hall room 101. Professor Olivier LeCourtois of EM Lyon Business School in Lyon, France, will speak on some reseaerch issues arising from the topics of the Associateship level professional actuarial examinations. This event is always open to the public.

How to Pass Actuarial Exams

On Wednesday, February 10, at 6:00 pm in Schroeder 138, Mike Paradiso, President of the Actuarial Club, will share his advice on preparing for actuarial exams. All students are welcome.

Internship Panel

On Wednesday, February 3, at 6:30 p.m. in STV 401, Actuarial Club Officers Isidro Espinoza, Jessica Ackley, Uktamjan Kamilov, and Tyler Shalitis will share their internship experiences, answer questions, and offer advice to students who are looking for internships. All students are welcome.

Presentation about health insurance by State Farm Actuaries: Mr. Glen Simpson and Mr. Brian Buss

On Tuesday, January 26, 2016, at 6 p.m., in STV 401, the Actuarial Program and the Actuarial Club hosted a presentation by State Farm actuaries, Mr. Glen Simpson and Mr. Brian Buss, on actuarial practice in health insurance.

First Spring 2016 General Meeting of the Actuarial Club

On Thursday, January 21, 2016, at 6 p.m. in Stevenson Hall room 101, the Actuarial Program and the Actuarial Club will the first general meeting of the Club this semester. Mr. Michael Paradiso, President of the Actuarial Club will speak about the planned activitiesof the Club anbd resources available to students. Actuarial Program Events: 2015

Study Night organized by the Actuarial Club

On Sunday, December 6, 2015, at 7 p.m., in STV 401A, the Actuarial Club with hold a finals Study Night. Students are welcome to come and discuss last minute questions with each other for finals. This event will also have a half hour yoga break for those interested in participating. Cookies and coffee will be provided by the Actuarial Program.

Asset-Liability Management at State Farm Insurance

On Thursday, November 19, 2015, at 6:00 p.m. in Stevenson Hall room 401, Dr. Wei Hao, FSA, CFA, MAAA made a special presentation on asset-liability management in practice at State Farm Insurance.

Life as a Zurich Actuary

On Wednesday, November 18, the Actuarial Club hosted a visit by Zurich Insurance. Actuaries Stacey Kidd and Ben Bussert discussed what it is like to be an actuary at Zurich. The event took place in Williams Hall room 001F at 6:30 p.m. Pizza was provided by Zurich Insurance.

Predictive Analytics Webinar Screening

On Wednesday November 4, 2015,2:00 PM - 3:30 PM in Stevenson Hall 401, the Actuarial Club held a group viewing of the CAS Student Central Webinar on Predictive Analytics. During this webinar, Christoper Monsour and Alina Andrei of CNA Insurance will shared their thoughts and experiences on data science, how to learn predictive analytics methods and which to focus on, and how the next generation of actuaries will push the world forward.

How to Pass Actuarial Exams

On Monday, October 19, 2015, at 6:00 p.m. in Stevenson Hall 101, Mr. Bright Amudzi, Vice President of the Actuarial Club for Study Actuvities, made a presentation entitled "How to Pass Actuarial Exams". All students are welcome.

How to Get the Most Out of Your Calculator

On Thursday, October 15, 2015, at 6:00 p.m. in Williams Hall room 001F, Mr. Tyler Shalitis, a general officer of the Actuarial Club, gave a presentation on calculators approved for actuarial examinations. The file used for the presentation can be downloaded here.

2015 Meet the Firms

2015 Meet the Firms event was held Wednesday, October 7, 2015, 6:00 p.m. -- 8:30 p.m. in the Prairie Room of the Bone Student Center on campus of Illinois State University, in Normal, Illinois. Campus map can be found at: http://www.IllinoisState.edu/map/. This event was an opportunity for actuarial employers to present themselves to students and collect students' resumes for internships and jobs. Employers can always contact Ms. Susan Mitchell, tel. 309-438-7797, fax 309-438-5866, or Dr. Krzysztof Ostaszewski, with any questions. Registration for employers was available online at: http://smartURL.it/MTFregister. There is no fee for employers to participate in this event. The following employers registered for the event: Aetna, Allstate, American Modern, Aon Hewitt, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois, BPSM, CNA, Country Financial, Erie, Horace Mann, Liberty Mutual, Mercer, Northwestern Mutual, Pekin Insurance,  Pinnacle Actuarial Resources, RGA, RLI, Segal Consulting, State Farm, TowersWatson, The Warranty Group, Zurich. There were also informational tables from: Actex Publications, and Casualty Actuarial Society Liaison Program.

2015 High School Actuarial Career Fairs

The 2015 High School Actuarial Career Fairs were held on Monday, October 5, 2015 in Chicago, Illinois, and on Friday, October 9, 2015, in Normal, Illinois. These annual fairs are primarily intended for high school students, but are open to college students, and anyone else seeking to learn about the actuarial career. These are not employment events, but rather meetings designed to provide information about the actuarial career. No resumes are accepted. The events were held:

Presentation on using R in real world applications by Ms. Amy Han, Data Analyst at UL

On Friday, October 2, 2015, at 1 p.m. in Stevenson Hall room 401, Ms. Amy Han, Data Analyst at UL, and an ISU alumna,  made a presentation about using R in real world applications. She has posted resources about her presentation for our students here: Some more R resources are also here.

Presentation by Ms. Luann Anderson from Pinnacle Actuarial Resources

On Wednesday, September 23, 2015, the Actuarial Program and the Actuarial Club hosted a visit by Ms. Luann Anderson from Pinnacle Actuarial Resources, who spoke about preparing a resume and planning an actuarial career. Presentation by Ms. Debbie Ungson-Walbert of the Career Center

On Monday, September 21, 2015,at 6 p.m. in room 101 in Stevenson Hall, the Actuarial Program and the Actuarial Club hosted a presentation by Ms. Debbie Ungson-Walbertof the Career Canter of Illinois State University, who  spoke about services that the Career Center offers to our students.

2015 Actuarial Club Picnic

The Actuarial Club held its annual picnic on September 19th at 11 am in People's Park on campus of Illinois State Univeristy. Following the picnic there was a campus scavenger hunt.

Presentation by Jim Jones, Katie School Director

On Wednesday, September 16, 2015, the Actuarial Program and the Actuarial Club hosted a presentation by Jim Jones, Katie School Director, who spoke about data sources and statistical project ideas available from the Katie School. The event took place at 6 p.m. in room 401 in Stevenson Hall. Materials from Jim Jones are posted here.

REMINDER: All students are welcome to participate in Statistical Project Competition, and this year we have external funding for prizes for projects that analyze public policy issues.

RGA Reinsurance visit

On Monday, September 14, 2015, the Actuarial Program and the Actuarial Club hosted a visit by RGA Reinsurance. The even took place in Stevenson Hall room 401 at 6 p.m.  Pizza and soft drinks were provided by RGA Reinsurance.

Adam Andrzejewski, CEO of Open The Books, spoke on data available for statistical projects analyzing public policy

Open The Books is a project of American Transparency, a 501(c)3 non-partisan, non-profit organization, dedicated to transparency in givernment. Its Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Adam Andrzejewski,  made a presentation on Friday, September 11, 2015, at 1 p.m. in Center for Visual Arts, room 147, on transparency in government and data available for statistical projects analyzing public policy.

REMINDER: All students are welcome to participate in Statistical Project Competition, and this year we have external funding for prizes for projects that analyze public policy issues.

Freshmen Q&A and Ice Cream Social of the Actuarial Club

On Wednesday, September 9, at 6:00 p.m. in Stevenson Hall room 101, all incoming freshmen had a chance to ask questions of the officers of the Actuarial Club, and officers answered them -- questions regarding the actuarial profession, studying actuarial science, and anything else they wanted to ask. All incoming freshmen were welcome to this event, and transfer students, and any students new to the Actuarial Program were encouraged to attend as well. Ice cream was served.

President and Secretary/Treasurer of the Actuarial Club report on the Society of Actuaries Student Summit for Centers of Actuarial Excellence

On Tuesday September 8, at 6:30 p.m. in Stevenson Hall room 401, Michael Paradiso and IC Weeraklaew presented a summary of the information from the Society of Actuaries Centers of Actuarial Excellence Student Summit.

Presentation on Catastrophe Modeling by Ms. Minchong Mao, FCAS, ASA, MAAA, Actuary at State Farm Insurance

On Tuesday, August 25, 2015, at 6 p.m. in Stevenson Hall room 401, the Actuarial Program and the Actuarial Club hosted a visit by Ms. Minchong Mao, FCAS, ASA, MAAA, actuary at State Farm Insurance, who made a presentation about Catastrophe Modeling.

First Fall 2015 General Meeting of the Actuarial Club

2015 Actuarial Research Event

The 2015 Actuarial Research Event was held on Tuesday, May 5, 2015, at 5:00 p.m. in State Farm Hall of Business room 366. Mr. Tom Terry, FSA,FCA, EA, MAAA, the immediate past President of the American Academy of Actuaries spoke about the actuarial profession and professionalism issues in general. This event is always open to the public.

2015 Actuarial Banquet

The 2015 Actuarial Banquet for actuarial students at Illinois State University was held on Monday, May 4, 2015, at 5:30 p.m. at The Chateau. Ms. Emily Ehrstein, FSA, alumna of our program and an actuary at State Farm  was the speaker at this event.

Officer Elections Followed by Bowling

On Monday, April 20, 2015, at 6:30 p.m., in STV 401A, the Actuarial Club held its elections for the 2015/2016 academic year, and after the elections, members went bowling.


SOA and CAS: Differences in the examinations tracks

On Wednesday, April 15, 2015, at 6:30 p.m., in room 401 of Stevenson Hall, Mr. Michael Paradiso, a student in our program, spoke about the differences between professional actuarial examinationsrequired by the Society of Actuaries and the Casualty Actuarial Society.

Internship Panel

On Monday, March 23, 2015, at 6:30 p.m. in STV 401, actuarial students who held internships last academic year shared their experiences, answered questions and helped other students who are looking for internships.

How to Pass Actuarial Exams

On Tuesday, March 17, 2015, at 6:30 p.m. in Center for Visual Arts room 145, Mr. Justin Vogel, President of the Actuarial Club, made a presentation entitled "How to Pass Actuarial Exams".

Ceremony of the award of the Lee Ann Murray "Everything Counts" Scholarship

On Saturday, March 14, 2015, at 9:15 a.m. in Stevenson Hall room 401, we held the ceremony of awarding the Lee Ann Murray "Everything Counts" Scholarshp. Coffee, tea, water and soft drinks, and, most importantly, pie, were served.

COUNTRY Financial Night

On Thursday, March 5, 2015, at 6:00 p.m. in Stevenson Hall room 401, the Actuarial Program and the Actuarial Club hosedt a COUNTRY Financial Night: Mr. David Prevo, FCAS, an actuary at COUNTRY Financial, and ISU alumnus, and other actuaries from COUNTRY Financial, and other acturies from the company, made a presentation to our students.

Presentation by Mr. Paul Vogel of Mutual of Omaha

On Monday, February 16, 2015, at 6:30 p.m. in Stevenson Hall room 401, the Actuarial Program and the Actuarial Club hosted a presentation by Mr.Paul Vogel from Mutual of Omaha, who spoke about the practical side of the work of actuaries, in consulting and in insurance companies, and changing regulatory environment.
