COVID Data Follies: Vaccination Rates, Relative Risk, and Simpson’s Paradox

You may have heard statistics in the news that most of the people testing positive for COVID, currently, in a particular location, or most of the people hospitalized for COVID, or even most of the people dying of COVID were vaccinated! How can that be? Does that prove that the vaccines are ineffective? Using real-world data, the speaker, Mary Pat Campbell, will show how these statistics can both be true and misleading. Simpson’s Paradox is involved, which has to do with comparing differences between subgroups with very different sizes and average results. Simpson’s Paradox actually appears quite often in the insurance world. Mary Pat Campbell, FSA, MAAA is a life actuary who works in Insurance Research at Conning, based out of Hartford, CT. She is an active volunteer with the Society of Actuaries. Her LinkedIn profile is here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/marypatcampbell/.

General Reinsurance Corporation, often called General Re, is one of the world’s largest reinsurance corporations. It owns a controlling interest in Koelnische Rueckversicherungs-Gesellschaft AG (Cologne Re) and both companies operate together as Gen Re. General Re is a wholly owned subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway, the holding company run by Warren Buffett.

Solvency II is the updated set of regulatory requirements for insurance firms that operate in the European Union. Solvency II will be based on economic principles for the measurement of assets and liabilities. It will also be a risk-based system as risk will be measured on consistent principles and capital requirements will depend directly on such measurement. It is scheduled to come into effect on 1 November 2012. Solvency II is likely to have major impact on the way insurance companies are regulated not just in Europe, but worldwide.

The lecture was presented at 4 p.m. on Friday, October 19, 2007. This event was open to the public. Here is the summary of Mr. Chalke’s presentation:

A Cash Flow Model of the American Professional
The nature of retirement is changing rapidly, as are patterns of earnings and expenditure. Attitudes about inter-generational transfer of wealth are also far different than those of just 20 years ago. Mix these factors with the steady decline of defined benefit pensions, and we have significant gaps in the provision of financial products. The industry has responded with a series of point solutions, but without a comprehensive view to changing consumer needs. By modeling individual cash flow patterns and in today’s society, we can develop a more holistic view of what consumers really need from the Financial Services Industry. Mr. Chalke will speak about the nature of saving and consumption changes over the last generation, and what this means for financial services.

Claire Bilodeau: Research Actuary

There will not be a Research Event in the Spring of 2008, and instead this Fall 2007, during the Illinois State University Sesquicentennial celebration, we host some special lectures.
