New trends in Triangulated categories and their
associated cohomology theories
- Place and Time
- This special session will run on Saturday, October 24th and
Sunday, October 25th in State College, Pennsylvania, on the (main)
campus of Penn State University.

In recent years there has been considerable interest in the interactions among homotopy theory, representation theory, and geometry. Triangulated categories and cohomology theories are key tools that play a central role in these interactions. Cohomology theories provide an efficient way to translate problems in homotopy theory, geometry and representation theory into algebra. The 20th century has seen a host of cohomology theories: group, Tate and Farrell cohomology in representation theory; singular, simplicial, and generalized cohomology in homotopy theory; local, de Rham and sheaf cohomology in geometry; Galois and \'etale cohomology in number theory and arithmetic geometry; cyclic, Hochschild, and Andre-Quillen cohomology in the study of algebras; and more recently motivic cohomology in the work of Voevodsky on the Bloch-Kato conjecture. Triangulated categories provide a natural home for these cohomology theories, and their importance in many different areas of mathematics has been increasing since their introduction by Puppe about 50 years ago. As the triangulated structures naturally arising in the fields above have been studied more deeply, many interesting and fruitful connections have been revealed. In this workshop, we plan to bring together young researchers and specialists working in these areas to further explore the depth of these connections.

- Homotopy theory special session
- There will be a parallel special session on Homotopy theory
organised by James Gillespie, Mark W. Johnson, Simona Paoli, and
Donald Yau.

adjacent.)
- Informal Dinner
-
We have planned an informal group dinner for Saturday evening, at
6:30 PM. We have no plans to make specific menu selections, provide
transportation, or get involved with handling money, although the
restaurant will be within about a half mile walk of the session
site. The Golden Wok, (814) 234-1102.
