This Spring of 2018, the Illinois State University Actuarial Program is celebrating the benchmark of having 250 ISU alumni who are now credentialed actuaries! We congratulate Ms. Sarah Coulson and Ms. Ama Ampadu-Kissi for becoming our 249th and 250th alumnae who are credentialed actuaries.
Even before the Actuarial Program was even started, one of our 1957 graduates was our first alumnus to become a credentialed actuary and a Fellow in the Casualty Actuarial Society in 1965, working for State Farm Insurance Companies during his career. Our second alumnus to become a credentialed actuary was Mr. Richard Bill, a 1965 graduate who went on to complete his masters at ISU in 1970, then became a Fellow in the Casualty Actuarial Society in 1972.
In 1997, Illinois State officially began an Actuarial Program under the direction of Professor Orlyn Edge with the offering of a Bachelor’s Degree in Actuarial Science. In 2000, Professor Krzysztof Ostaszewski (FSA, CERA, FSAS, CFA, MAAA) joined the Illinois State University Mathematics Department to become the Director of our growing Actuarial Program and we started offering a Masters Degree in Actuarial Science in 2001.
In 2008, Ms. Devyn Clifford (2001) became our 100th graduate to become credentialed actuary by becoming an Associate in the Casualty Actuarial Society in 2008 and then a Fellow in the Casualty Actuarial Society in 2012. In 2015, our 2007 graduate, Ms. Kritiga Muthuswamy, became our 200th credentialed actuary as an Associate in the Society of Actuaries.
Illinois State University has enjoyed strong partnerships with companies in the Bloomington-Normal area such as State Farm Companies, Country Financial, and Pinnacle Actuarial Resources, as well as a number of companies located in Illinois and throughout the United States.
Our program has now grown and we have approximately 575 graduates working as actuaries. In 2009, our program was recognized by the Society of Actuaries as a Center of Actuarial Excellence, being among the first 13 universities in the world to receive this recognition, and the first university in Illinois to be recognized in this way. In 2016, we were one of four universities to receive the inaugural University Awards of the Casualty Actuarial Society.
One of the keys to our success is our harmonious partnership with ISU’s Katie School of Insurance and Financial Services. In addition to strengthening our ties to the insurance industry, the Katie School supports a number of curricular and co-curricular student development activities. This includes supporting Gamma Iota Sigma, an insurance organization that involves both insurance students and actuarial students in industry-related events in addition to supporting outside speakers and travel to conferences. The Katie School also gives our actuarial students the ability to earn a Certificate in Leadership and Business Acumen to prepare our students for success in the business world.
We are pleased to continue celebrate the success of our graduates by recognizing our 250th former student to become a credentialed actuary! Congratulations not only to Ms. Coulson and Ms. Ampadu-Kissi, but to all the successful alumni of our programs! We look forward to the continued success of our alumni!
