Finals Study Night

The Actuarial Club held its traditional Finals Study Night on Sunday, December 8, 2019 at 6:00pm in Stevenson Hall room 401. Open to all students. Cookies and motivation to study were provided.

Presentation about Asset-Liability Management by Dr. Wei Hao, FSA

On Tuesday, November 19, 2019, at 6 p.m. in STV 101, Dr. Wei Hao, FSA, who directs asset-liability management at State Farm, made a presentation about asset-liability management. Open to all students. Pizza and soft drinks were provided.


How to Pass Actuarial Exams presentation

The Actuarial Club officers made a presentation on how to pass actuarial exams on Tuesday, November 5, 2019 at 6:30pm in Stevenson Hall room 401A. Open to all students.


Seminar on Professionalism

On Wednesday, October 30, 2019, at 6:00 p.m. in SFHB 356 our Actuarial Club President, Scott Damery lead a seminar on professionalism.. Open to all students.

Alumni Day speaker: Mr. Tyler Lueck, FSA

On Friday, October 25, 2019, at 2:30 p.m. in room 401A of Stevenson Hall, our alumnus Mr. Tyler Lueck, FSA, an actuary at State Farm spoke about his career path and his advice for students who want to become professional actuaries. Open to all students.

Board Games Social

The Actuarial Club board games social event took place Thursday, October 24, 2019, at 6pm.in STV 401A. Open to all students.


Presentation on Actuarial Credentials by Pinnacle Actuarial Resources

On October 16, 2019 at 6pm in SFHB 356, our alumni Kristen Marshall and Erich Brandt of Pinnacle Actuarial Resources spoke about Statements of Actuarial Opinions (SAOs), where actuarial credentials are put to use. Students gained greater understanding of the purpose behind the exams process and helped write an SAO for a sample company. Open to all students.

Travelers Presentation (via Skype)

On September 30, 2019 at 6 p.m. in State Farm Hall of Business room 356 Winnie Sloan and other actuaries from Travelers St. Paul office made a presentation via Skype to tell our students about working at Travelers and internship opportunities. Open to all students.


2019 Meet the Firms

2019 Meet the Firms actuarial employment event was held Monday, September 23, 2019, 5:30 p.m. -- 8:00 p.m. in the Brown Ballroom on campus of Illinois State University, in Normal, Illinois. Campus map can be found at: http://www.IllinoisState.edu/map/. This event was an opportunity for actuarial employers to present themselves to students and collect students' resumes for internships and jobs. Employers can always contact Ms. Susan Mitchell, tel. 309-438-7797, fax 309-438-5866, or Dr. Krzysztof Ostaszewski, with any questions. Registration for employers was available online at: http://smartURL.it/MTFregister. There is no fee for employers to participate in this event. More information about the event is at: http://smartURL.it/MeetTheFirms. We cannot accommodate students from other universities at this event any more, only Illinois State University students can participate.

Presentation by President of the Casualty Actuarial Society

On Monday, September 23, 2019, our Actuarial Club and Actuarial Program welcomed the recent President of the Casualty Actuarial Society,  Mr. Brian Brown, FCAS, alumnus of Illinois State University, at 1:30 p.m. in room 401 in Stevenson Hall. He made a presentation about the Casualty Actuarial Society and careers in property/casualty insurance.  Open to all students.

Presentation by past Presidents of Actuarial Club

On Thursday, September 19, 2019, 6-8 p.m., in Stevenson Hall room 101, our alumnus Charles Johnson, ASA, an actuary at Northwestern Mutual, and former President of our Actuarial Club, together with some other Presidents of our Actuarial Club made a presentation to help students prepare for the Meet The Firms event that was held on September 23. Open to all students.

Mentor Night

On Wednesday, September 18, 2019, 6-8 p.m., in Stevenson Hall room 101, our Actuarial Club hosted its Mentor Night. Open to all students.

Midwest Actuarial Students Conference

On Friday, September 13, 2019 and Saturday, September 14, our Actuarial Club hosted the Midwest Actuarial Students Conference (MASC). The 2019 MASC was held at the Radisson Hotel & Conference Center located at 8 Traders Circle in Normal, Illinois. Midwest Actuarial Students Conference Volunteers Orientation

On Thursday, September 11, 2019, 6-8 p.m., in Stevenson Hall room 101, our Actuarial Club held an orientation for volunteers for the Midwest Actuarial Students Conference to be held September 13-14, 2019 at Illinois State University. All students are welcome.

Presentation by Reinsurance Group of America

On Tuesday, September 10, 2019, 6-8 p.m., in  SFHB 145, our alumna Sarah Weller, FSA, our alumna Kelsie Kligenberg, and George Baker, all of Reinsurance Group of America (RGA) spoke about their company, their experiences working there, and preparing for the actuarial career. Open to all students.

Presentation by Alex Sommer, ASA, our alumnus and actuary at Cigna

On Tuesday, September 3, 2019, 6-8 p.m., in Stevenson Hall room 101, Mr. Alex Sommer, ASA, our alumnus and actuary at Cigna, made a presentation about his company and provided advice on internship/job search, preparing a resume and preparing for Meet the Firms event. Open to all students.

First Fall 2019 Actuarial Club General Meeting

On Monday, August 26, 2019, at 6 pm in Stevenson Hall room 101, the Actuarial Club will hold its first general meeting for the Fall 2019 semester. Open to all students.

Finals Study Night

The Actuarial Club welcomed all students to Finals Study Night on Sunday, May 5, 2019, 5-7 p.m., in rooms 401 and 401A in Stevenson Hall.

2019 Actuarial Banquet

The 2019 Actuarial Banquet took place on Friday, May 3, 2019, at the Bloomington/Normal Marriott. Our special guest was Mr. Stephen Kern, former President of the American Academy of Actuaries, former actuary at State Farm, now retired, and our program alumnus. Our speaker was Mr. Charles Johnson, our program alumnus, an actuary at State Farm.

On Tuesday, April 16, 2019, 4 p.m. in Stevenson Hall room 401, Gary Wang, FCAS, from Pinnacle Actuarial Resources, made a presentation about stochastic reserving.

Presentation on health insurance reserving at State Farm

On Thursday, April 11, 2019, 4 p.m. in Williams Hall room 1F, Sarah Kline and Grant Wilken from State Farm made a presentation about health insurance reserving. Pizza and soft drinks were provided by State Farm.

Actuarial Club elections for the 2019/2020 academic year were  held on Wednesday, April 10, 2019 at 6 p.m. in Stevenson Hall room 401A.

On Monday, April 1, 2019, 6 p.m. in room 101 in Stevenson Hall, David Holden from State Farm made a presentation about rate indications and credibility. Open to all students. Pizza and soft drinks were provided by State Farm.

Volunteering for Midwest Food Bank

On Saturday, March 30, 2019, 9 a.m. - 11 a.m. a group of students volunteered at Midwest Food Bank. The event was coordinated by Mr. Zachary Lew, Actuarial Club's Vice President for Volunteer Efforts.

On Tuesday, March 26, 2019, 6 p.m. in Stevenson Hall room 401, Lisa Pankau, FCAS, from Zurich Insurance made a presentation on different roles of actuaries at her company. Open to all students. Pizza and soft drinks were provided by Zurich Insurance.

On Monday, March 25, 2019, 6 p.m. in Stevenson Hall room 401, our alumnus Mr. Joshua Collier, now working at CNA, made a presentation entitled Think Like an Actuary. Open to all students. Pizza and soft drinks weere provided by CNA.

On Wednesday, March 20, 2019, 6 p.m. in Williams Hall room 1F, representatives from American Family Insurance made a presentation entitled Internship Best Practices and Ethical Dilemmas. Open to all students. Pizza and soft drinks were provided by American Family Insurance.

2019 Actuarial Research Event: Presentation by Satadru Sengupta of Halos Insurance

On Monday, March 4, 2019, at 3:45 p.m. in Stevenson Hall room 101, Mr. Satadru Sengupta of Halos Insurance, our alumnus, spoke about creating his insuretech startup. Here is some information about him and the company:
Satadru Sengupta is the founder and CEO of Halos Insurance - where he is developing a loss preventive insurance platform that complements reactive and rarely used insurance with a proactive, everyday solution that prevents and mitigates losses - leading to safer and better lives for consumers. Halos was started with MetLife Digital Accelerator Powered by Techstars and then also got funding from Plug and Play Ventures.  Previously, Satadru built and ran the insurance practice at DataRobot - the pioneer of Automated Machine Learning. A practicing data scientist for 12 years, Satadru led the Global Distribution Analytics at AIG Science Team, worked with Liberty Mutual Insurance and Deloitte Consulting before joining DataRobot in 2015. Satadru holds an MS in Statistics from George Washington University and an MS in Mathematics from Illinois State University. Satadru is also CSPA designee from Casualty Actuarial Society.
Halos Insurance: Using the data from smart devices, we are building a loss prevention & claims reporting platform to help property insurers improve profitability & customer lifetime value through loss mitigation and increased customer engagement, by empowering homeowners with risk insights, access to service providers, and self-service claims. We are working with insurance companies to upgrade their claims reporting process and bringing regular, helpful touch points with consumers as they do their home maintenance using Halos platform.

On Monday, February 18, 2019, 6 p.m. in Stevenson Hall room 401, Meghan Goldfarb and Anthony Salis from State Farm  made a presentation on predictive modeling and the future of the actuarial career. Open to all students.

Volunteering for Habitat for Humanity

On Saturday, February 16, 2019, 8 a.m. - 12 p.m. a group of students volunteered at Habitat for Humanity to help build their 25th house. This activity was managed by Mr. Zachary Lew, Actuarial Club's Vice President for Volunteer Efforts.

How To Pass Actuarial Exams

On Wednesday, February 13, 2019, 6 p.m. in Stevenson Hall room 101, Actuarial Club President Kristen Marshall and Actuarial Club officers Ellie Cheline and Levi Triplo made a presentation on studying for and passing professional actuarial examinations . Open to all students.

State Farm Trivia Night

On Monday, February 11, 2019, 6 p.m. in Stevenson Hall room 101, representatives  from State Farm made a presentation about their company in the form of a Trivia Quiz. Open to all students.

First Spring 2019 Actuarial Club General Meeting

On Monday, January 28, 2019, at 6 pm in Stevenson Hall room 101, the Actuarial Club held its first general meeting for the Spring 2019 semester. Open to all students.
