What to do when encountering obstacles in enrolling in non-mathematics classes required of actuarial students

Accounting (ACC) 131, 132

All actuarial sequence majors are required to take these accounting classes. If you encounter difficulty enrolling in them, go to the Accounting Department office, identify yourself as an actuarial student and ask for help in enrolling in these required classes. Information Technology (IT) 166 and 168

All actuarial sequence majors are required to take one of these two Information Technology classes. If you encounter difficulty enrolling in it, go to the School of Information Technology, identify yourself as an actuarial student and ask for help in enrolling in this required class.

Finance Insurance and Law (FIL) 341, 250, and 242

All undergraduate actuarial sequence majors are required to take FIL 242, 250 and 341. Additionally, FIL 242 and FIL 341, together with ACC 131, satisfy the Validation by Educational Experience (VEE) Accounting and Finance requirements (note that FIL 242 can be replaced by MAT 483, a graduate class in mathematics, for the VEE Finance purpose). Standard prerequisites for FIL 242 and FIL 341 are replaced by ACC 131, ACC 132, MAT 280 and MAT 350 for actuarial sequence majors, so do not attempt to enroll in these FIL classes until after you have completed ACC 131, ACC 132, MAT 280 and MAT 350. In order to enroll in these FIL classes, you must ask for help from Ms. Kathy Sims in the College of Business Advising, tel. (309) 438-8385, e-mail: kesims@ilstu.edu. You should be able to enroll into these classes, even though they are designated as restricted to majors, if you are an actuarial sequence major, but you must make your request to Ms. Kathy Sims.

MBA 440, Financial Management

This graduate level class, together with FIL 242 or Mathematics 483, as welll as ACC 131 accounting class, satisfies the Validation by Educational Experience (VEE) Accounting and Finance requirements. Graduate actuarial students interested in taking MBA 440 must contact the College of Business MBA Program advising office and request a special permission for non-majors to take it. Such students must prove knowledge of material in MAT 350 (or having passed Course P/1 actuarial examination), and MAT 280 (or having passed Course FM/2 actuarial examination).
