******Finals Week Office Hours are:** Monday 12/13, 1:00 - 1:50; Wednesday, 12/15, 10:00-10:50.********

**PREREQUISITES:** C or better in MAT 146 required; MAT 147 recommended.

**CATALOG DESCRIPTION:** Vector Geometry, matrices, systems of linear equations,
vector spaces, linear transformations,
eigenvalues, diagonalization, applications to the physical and social sciences.

**TEXT:** *Elementary Linear Algebra: A Matrix Approach, 2e*, by Friedberg,
Insel, and Spence. Prentice Hall, Upper Saddle River NJ, 2008. (The
webpage maintained by the authors can be found at
http://www.cas.ilstu.edu/math/matrix/.)

**CALCULATORS:** A Calculator with matrix and CAS capabilities is required.
The TI-89 is recommended.

**SYLLABUS:** The course will cover most of Chapters 1-6 of the text.

**COURSE OBJECTIVES:** MAT 175 is designed to be a transition course between
lower-level classes that emphasize calculuation and upper-level classes that emphasize
proofs and problem-solving. There are three principal goals for this course:

- to learn the content of Chapters 1-6 of the text;
- to grow in your ability to learn mathematics on your own;
- to learn to write simple proofs.

**GRADING:** Grades will be assigned on the basis of 650 points,
as follows:

- 3 hour exams worth 100 points each
- Quizzes, homework,and classwork 150 points total
- Final exam, 200 points

The final exam will be a comprehensive examination. It is
scheduled on __Thursday, December 16th, 7:50 __**a.m.**__ to
10:30 __**a.m.**

*NOTE: Attendance at exams is required. If you must miss an exam for a
legitimate reason, you must notify me in advance, either by calling my office before
class or by e-mailing me.*

**HOMEWORK/QUIZZES:** Each week you will be assigned a series of
problems in the text or online. Some of these problems will be designated quiz problems that
you will be quizzed on when announced, typically on Fridays. The rest of these problems
will be handed in for a grade each Thursday before the end of class.

**WITHDRAWAL:** The last day for undergraduates to withdraw from
a full-session course is Friday, October 15th.

**ON THE WEB:**

- Math Archives, from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville
- Math
Forum, from Swarthmore College

- Understanding
Mathematics: a study guide, from the University of Utah

- Materials for Linear Algebra, from Duke University
- Sage Mathematics Software on the WEB is a computer algebra system you can use on the Web if you sign up for a free account.

**STUDENT HANDOUTS:**

Handouts from class will typically be posted here in PDF format.
