Related Skills

The Data Science and Computational Mathematics major requires a broad range of both soft and technical skills.  Through Illinois State’s program, you will not only be equipped with industry knowledge of programming and mathematics, but will develop important soft skills like communication and analysis.

Communication

Data scientists and computational mathematicians work in teams, thus communication and teamwork are important for effective collaboration with others.

Data science is also the bridge between business and technology. This means that industry professionals need to be able to communicate effectively to technical and non-technical audiences.

Communication is a cornerstone of the profession, therefore data scientists and computational mathematicians need strong written and verbal communication skills.

Research and Analysis

Data science often deals with data as it relates to business and other industries. Researching markets and objectives is important for properly analyzing data sets for relevant information.

The analysis of data is a hallmark of the professional. Large data sets require intense filtering of relevant and irrelevant data which is done through the analysis of data and aided by the development of algorithms and computer functions to ease this process.

In data science, you can be sure to use research and analysis methods on a day-to-day basis, therefore it is one of the most important skills a professional can have.

Technology

Both data science and computational mathematics rely heavily on computers and algorithms. A strong understanding of technology is necessary for this major.

Knowledge of programming languages and concepts is important to effectively develop algorithms and mathematical functions for computers. Through our program’s curriculum, you will learn popular programming languages such as Python and R.

New programming languages are always being developed and it is impossible to know them all, so you will also be equipped with a strong knowledge of programming, databases, and data structures that will allow you to quickly master the knowledge you may need to know in the profession.

Mathematics and Statistics

As the program name implies, mathematics and statistics are a key skill needed for success in the profession. Data science and computational mathematics requires a deep understanding of linear algebra, calculus, statistics, and computation.

In computational mathematics, math is used in the development of algorithms and computer functions; in data science, it is used to understand, analyze, and organize data sets.

Don’t worry if you do not know these subjects headed in. Through Illinois State’s robust curriculum, you will be equipped with more than enough mathematical and statistical knowledge to help you thrive in whatever field you decide to pursue.

Being Successful in the Field

To be successful as a Data Science and Computational Mathematics student, it is best to always be curious, work hard, and keep in frequent contact with your professors.
